The Problem
When you double-click the shortcut to an Excel file or a workbook in IE, Microsoft Office Excel starts but the file does not open and an error message is displayed.
- With Windows 7 and Windows 8, you may see this error message: “There was a problem sending the command to the program.”
- With Windows Vista, you may see this error message: “Windows cannot find 'FilePath\FileName', Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.”
- With Windows XP, you may see this error message: “Cannot find the file 'path' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available. There was a problem sending the command to the program.
The problem occurs because the Excel setting: "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)" is selected.
The Solution
Excel cannot receive data from File Explorer and IE when the "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)" setting is selected in Excel. The fix involves clearing the setting.
